By now, we’re sure you’ve heard about Giving Tuesday, but you may be wondering just how your organization can take part. We’ve got all the information you need!
What is Giving Tuesday?
Giving Tuesday, or, as you’ll often see it referred to, #GivingTuesday, began in 2012 and has grown in popularity around the world ever since. The event provides an opportunity to give back to the causes that matter after spending a few days spoiling ourselves with Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
According to GivingTuesday.org, it has grown to feature participation from organizations in 68 countries and an estimated 470% increase in online donations on the Tuesday following US ThanksGiving.
In 2015, #GivingTuesday will take place on December 1st.
How can my nonprofit take part?
Organizations around the globe are invited to join in and embrace Giving Tuesday as a tremendous fundraising opportunity!
While nonprofits can fundraise any way they see fit, most of the buzz and action around the event will happen online. That's why a great online donation page is a must-have. You'll also want to take some time to plan your social media and email outreach leading up to the big day.
Get involved at no cost: If you’re fundraising with Causeview or the Salesforce Nonprofit Starter Pack, you can participate easily with ActionPages. Setup a dedicated #GivingTuesday page with built-in iATS payment processing and you’ll be ready to go in no time!
How can my organization succeed on Giving Tuesday?
Your fundraisers know your unique supporters best, but we have a few tips that should help you benefit on December 1st.
- Be social: There will be a lot of social media buzz on and leading up to Giving Tuesday. Your prospective donors will certainly see messages about other causes on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and you will want to make sure that you are front and center. That way, the excitement around the day will combine with your appeals to urge your supporters to contribute.
- Be direct: Giving Tuesday is all about taking action for great causes as donors are happy to open their wallets. There are a lot of other chances to try and build long-standing support by asking an audience to learn about your cause or join your mailing list, but on this day, you’ll want to take advantage of the opportunity to make direct, clear asks.
- Be mindful: When Giving Tuesday arrives, donors will have probably spent money elsewhere on Black Friday and Cyber Monday and may give to other causes that day as well. That means that while they will be open to giving, you will want to make smaller, easy-to-manage asks that won’t create much hesitation. You can focus on your major gift and recurring donation strategies on other occasions, but on Giving Tuesday, your best bet may be to aim for a large number of modest contributions.
Giving Tuesday is just over a month away, so the time is coming to launch your impactful fundraiser. If you want to make sure you benefit from #GivingTuesday, join our mailing list for many more tips and tricks!
